May 4, 2013 Join the Chebucto Hiking Club for a moderate 10 km group hike along the Admiral Lake Trail. This hike is suitable for all ages and is rated 4C – a good deal of significant hill climbing and significant part of the hike takes place on somewhat difficult terrain (rocky, rooted paths). We will meet at the trailhead parking lot in Musquodoboit Harbour off Hwy 357. Dress for weather conditions. Please bring snacks, lots of water, lunch and hiking boots. May 11, 2013 Get involved with the wildlife park. An exciting opportunity for the wildlife park and for you! Do you enjoy working outside, interacting with people, or making nature crafts with children? If you have skills in sharing nature whether it is plant, animal, wetland or ecosystem knowledge, we need your help to contribute to the visitor experience at the wildlife park. You may contribute by helping us remove alien plant species from the wetlands, or enhancing park drama through puppet shows! There are many opportunities to choose from! If you are interested in learning more visit the Wetland Centre to sample the types of volunteering opportunities available to you. All are welcome, however, in order to volunteer at the park you must be 16 years of age or older. Pre-register is required and you must receive confirmation from the park in order to attend. May 11, 2013 Join local birder Verna Higgins for a 2-3 hour moderate walk on the trails of the Natural Resources Education Centre McCurdy Woodlot in Middle Musquodoboit to see and hear late migrant and resident song birds. This a great walk for the entire family. Dress for weather conditions. Bring waterproof footwear, insect repellent, water, snacks and binoculars (if you have them). May 12, 2013 Join the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club on World Walking Day for an easy 5 km or 10 km guided walk at Porters Lake Provincial Park and area. Suitable for all ages. This walk is rated 1B and will take place on well-groomed park trails with very little more difficult terrain and some pavement walking. Wear walking boots or shoes and dress for weather conditions. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, water and a snack. We will meet at the parking lot entrance at 1160 West Porters Lake Road to sign-in. Please note that there is a $1 event fee. May 18, 2013 Interested in learning how to fish? Join Deanna Nauss to learn all about fishing and then get the chance to cast a line into the water. Through an instructional, hands-on session learn the basics of fishing. You will be shown how to prepare your line for fishing, bait your hook, and some helpful techniques to use. Also learn a bit about the kinds of fish normally caught in Nova Scotia and the ethics of fishing. Rods will be provided, pre-registration is required. Meet at the Beach House. May 25, 2013 New birders of all ages are welcome to join members of the Nova Scotia Bird Society for a one to two hour walk along this beautiful trail, where we can expect to see lots of warblers and woodpeckers. May 25, 2013 This canoe/kayak trip will be led by Canoe Kayak Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Department of Environment staff. We plan to paddle a short section of the gently flowing Musquodoboit River and the wildly meandering Meadow Brook (aka “Kelly Meadow”), to be followed by a 500 m hike up to the outlet of Collins Lake, gateway to a rugged lake district. This event is suitable for adults only. We expect to also walk short sections of the North Granite Ridge Trail and of the Musquodoboit Trailway, both of which intersect our water route. Participants are required to provide their own canoes or sea kayaks plus safety gear. Dress for weather conditions. Bring lunch, drinks, insect repellent, sunscreen, hat, and extra clothing for this all-day portage-less trip. Estimated distance to be travelled is about 10 km. Meet at the Railway Station Museum, Musquodoboit Harbour located on Hwy 7, at 9:30 AM. Pre-register with Dusan Soudek by May 18 at either soudekd@ns.sympatico.ca or (902) 422-1045. May 26, 2013 The community is invited to come celebrate and learn more about the work of the Five Bridges Wilderness Heritage Trust. This volunteer organization is offering a fun day including a barbecue, games and activities for the children. There will be displays of what the Trust does as well as other local community group displays. Please dress appropriately for weather conditions. Meet at the inner parking lot.
