Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park

Moonlight Tour

Have you ever walked in the forest at night?  Join us in an easy, guided moonlight walk of the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park.  Get a nocturnal view of the park and its inhabitants.  The fee is $6 per person.  Cash only.  This event is recommended for ages 6 and up. Dress for weather conditions.   Please bring water, flashlights, insect repellant, and wear good walking/hiking shoes.  Prepregistration is required.    You must receive confirmation from the park to attend. Admiral Lake Trail Hike

Join the Chebucto Hiking Club for a 10 KM group wilderness hike along the Admiral Lake Trail.  This hike is suitable for all ages and is rated 4C - a good deal of significant hill climbing and significant part of the hike takes place on difficult terrain (rocky, rooted paths).  We will meet at the trailhead parking lot in Musquodoboit Harbour, off Hwy 357.  Dress for weather conditions.  Please bring snacks, lots of water, lunch, insect repellent and hiking boots.  Hike will last approximately 3 1/2 - 4 hours.  Contact Don at (902) 445-5141, email chebuctohiking@hotmail.com or visit www.chc.chebucto.org.

McIntosh Run Trail

Join the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club for a spring walk through the wilderness area of McIntosh Run.  Experience the various landscapes and plant communities of this unique wilderness area so close to the center of the city.  This hike is rated 2B - some moderate hill or stair climbing and a significant part of the walk takes place on well-groomed trails with very little dificult terrain.  Registration begins at 9:30 AM.  Dress for weather conditions and wear sturdy walking shoes or boots.  Bring water, snacks, sunscreen and insect repellent.  Meet at South Centre Mall, Herrin Cove Road at Denith.  New walkers have 5 free walks, club members pay a fee of $2.  Contact Sandy at (902) 466-3816.

Taylor Head Provincial Park

Migration Bird Count

New and experienced birders are welcome to join Jim Cameron in an event sponsored by the Nova Scotia Bird Society.  We will be counting all bird species including Cormorants (Greater and Double-crested), Long-tailed Ducks, Willets, Greater Yellow Legs, Magnolia Warblers, Swainson's, Hermit Thrush, Fox and Song Sparrows and more.  Participants are asked to bring snacks, lunch, water, hot drink, hiking sneakers or boots and equipment used for birding. Porters Lake Provincial Park

World Walking Day

Join the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club on World Walking Day for an easy 5 KM or 10 KM guided walk at Porter's Lake Provincial Park and area.  Suitable for all ages.  This walk is rated 1B and will take place on well-groomed park trails with very little more difficult terrain and some pavement walking.  Wear walking boots or shoes and dress for weather conditions.  Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, water, and a snack.  Take Highway 107, Exit 19 and we will meet at the parking lot entrance at 1160 West Porter's Lake Road to sign in.  Contact Belinda at (902)-434-6412 for the 10 KM walk or Margaret at (902)-454-9280 for the 5 KM walk.

Beginner Bird Walk

Join local birder Verna Higgins for a 2 - 3 hour moderate walk on the trails of the Natural Resources Education Centre, McCurdy Woodlot in Middle Musquodoboit to see and hear migrant and resident song birds with emphasis on how to identify birds by song, sight and behavior.  This 2 KM walk is ideal for the entire family.  Dress for weather conditions.  Bring waterproof footwear, insect repellent, water, snacks and binoculars (if you have them).  Meet at the Natural Resources Education Centre parking lot (12014 Highway 224 near Middle Musquodoboit).  Sponsored by the Nova Scotia Bird Society and NS Department of Natural Resources.  No rain date is scheduled.  Contact Verna at (902) 384-2286 or email vjhiggins@xplornet.com.

CVF National Walking Week-End

Join the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club for a 12 KM hike.  This hike is suitable for adults only and is rated 3C - some significant hill or stair climbing and a significant part of the walk takes place on somewhat difficult terrain (rocky/rooted paths).  Participants are asked to meet at the Visitor Information Centre across from the DeGarthe Granite Memorial and Museum in Peggy's Cove on Hwy 333.  Dress for weather conditions and wear sturdy footwear.  Bring insect repellent, drinking water and a snack.  Contact John at (902) 532-0503.

Blomidon Provincial Park

Fairy Shrimps, Sping Flowers and Birds

Join Naturalist Jim Wolford for an interpretive walk on the Jodrey Trail to a seasonal pond that contains the rare and beautiful fairy shrimp.  Other pond life, spring flowers, and birds will also be seen or heard.  A look-off toward Five Islands Provincial Park, across the Minas Basin, will be visited.  This very easy nature walk is suitable for all ages who are capable of the distance (approximately 2 km).  Dress for weather conditions and wear rubber bottomed footwear (recommended).  Bring water, snacks, sunscreen and insect repellent.  Binculars, cameras, magnifying glasses, and field guides are also recommended, if you have them.  Visitors to the park will meet at the park office at 10 AM, those who are camping at the park may meet at the trails map located at the entrance to the wooded camping sites at 10:10 AM.  Sponsored by the Blomidon Naturalists Society.  Contact Jim at (902) 542-9204.  This event will be held rain or shine.

May Fair in the Park

Join the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club for a 5,10 or 12 KM hike.  The 5 or 10 KM hike are easy hikes rated as 1B and will take place on well-groomed park trails with very little more difficult terrain and very little hills.  The 12 KM hike (Admiral Lake Trail) will take 4 - 5 hours to complete and is rated as 4C - a significant part of the walk takes place on somewhat difficult terrain (rocky/rooted paths) with a good deal of significant hills and climbing.  Dress for weather conditions and wear sturdy walking shoes or boots.  Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and insect repellent.  Meet at the Railway Station Museum, Musquodoboit Harbour located on Hwy 7. St. Peters Volksmarch

Join the Cape Breton Island Hoppers for a 5 or 10 KM walk.  This hike is suitable for all ages.  Participants will meet at Battery Provincial Park picnic area at the park entrance.  The walk will include trails within the park as well as  along the trail on the water side behind the town of St. Peters. This hike could take approximately 2 hours  Registration will take place at 1:30 pm.  Please note that there is a $2 fee.  Dress for weather conditions and wear good walking shoes.  Bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent and snacks.  Contact Julie at (902) 562-5789 or email juliedzaich@bellaliant.net.
