Canada Day Bicycle Parade

Celebrate Canada Day!  Children are invited to decorate their bikes and join the parade through the park and then enjoy some cake! Canada Day Walk

A 5 km and 10 km guided walk event for participants of all ages and abilities. This event will take place prior to Canada Day celebrations at the park.   Registration will take place at 9 AM and there will be a fee of $2.00/person.  Dress for weather conditions, and wear walking shoes (no flip flops).  Bring 1-2 bottles of water, snacks, and sunscreen to be carried with you.  Meet at the Petersfield Provincial Park parking lot. Day camp for ages 6 to 9 years.  Explore nature through games, crafts, guest speakers and songs!  Experience the great outdoors! You may attend one or all three days. Pre-registration is required.      Participants will meet at The Islands Picnic Park.  Please note that registration fees are $8 each or $12 per family each day.  Please bring lots of water, two snacks, a lunch, hat, sunscreen, suitable clothing and footwear(flip flops are not recommended). Taylor Head Provincial Park

Taylor Head Hike

Join the Chebucto Hiking Club for either a 10 or 22 km hike.  These hikes are suitable for adults and are rated 3C, some significant hill or stair climbing and 4C - a good deal of significant hill climbing respectively. A significant part of the walks take place on somewhat difficult terrain(rocky,rooted paths).  Participants are asked to meet for the 10km at the main parking lot at the park; and the 22km will start at Bull Beach parking lot. Wetland Wonders

Storybook Walk

Join us on the trails for a modest hike as we share some of our favorite nature based story books.  Along the walk and in between readings we will use our senses to explore wildlife & look for signs to learn about some of their fascinating stories as well.  This program is designed for families & younger participants ages four and up, adult supervision is required.  Feel free to bring any nature story book to share although keep in mind, we may not get to all of them! Taylor Head Provincial Park

Beginning Birders Field Trip

Bird enthusiasts of all levels are welcome to join the Friends of Taylor Head Park Society for this event.  This event is suitable for adults only.   Prior to the walk, we will discuss equipment, guide books, and audio and visual aids useful to birders.  We will take a casual walk along Power's Pond and look at nesting birds such as Common Terns, Willets, Lincoln's Sparrows and Spotted Sandpipers.  The walk will take about three hours and we will eat lunch on the trail.  Please bring binoculars (if you have them), sturdy hiking boots or sneakers, sunscreen, insect repellent, water, hot drink, snacks and a lunch.  Meet at the kiosk in the last parking lot.  Contact Jim at (902) 885-2970, email jim.cameron@ns.sympatico.ca or visit www.friendsoftaylorhead.com.

Sand Castle Competition & Beach Games

Make it a beach day and bring your bathing suit, buckets and shovels!  Create a sand sculpture with your friends or family for the sand castle competition.  Fun to watch, but more fun to participate.  Categories include 7 and under, 8 - 12, teens, adults, and family. Clam Digging

Join us for a clam digging demonstration at Five Islands Beach.  Learn how to dig for clams with a professional clam digger and learn about the intriguing life cycle of the soft-shelled clam.  This event is perfect for all ages.  Wear old shoes, water shoes or rubber boots as there will be some mud and water involved (bare feet is not recommended).  Remember you will be on mud flats so hats, sunscreen and drinking water are advised.  Please bring a bucket and digging tool such as a garden fork or shovel.  Meet at the beach parking lot.  Sponsored by NS Department of Natural Resources.  For more information contact the park at (902) 254-2980 or email fiveislandspark@gov.ns.ca.

Moonlight Tour

Have you ever heard wolves howl at night?  Join us in an easy, guided moonlight walk of the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park.  Get a nocturnal view of the park and its inhabitants.  The fee is $6 per person.  Cash only.  This event is recommended for ages 6 and up.  Dress for weather conditions.  Please bring water, insect repellent, wear good walking shoes and bring flashlights.   Pre-registration is required.  You must receive  confirmation from the park to attend.  Meet at the Greenwing Legacy Interpretive Centre.  Sponsored by NS Department of Natural Resources.  To register email legacycentre@gov.ns.ca or phone (902) 758-5316.

Interpretive Paddle

Join The Song of the Paddle for an after-supper interpretive kayaking trip along the shoreline of Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park.  Becky Cottreau and Deanna Nauss will be your guides as you learn about beautiful Lake Ellenwood, the history of the park, and the amazing flora and fauna found here.  Bring your own kayak and equipment or request one of the limited number of boats available, compliments of The Song of the Paddle. Wildflower Walk

Blomidon Provincial Park has many interesting wildflowers and shrubs. We will visit several areas in the park to look at some of these plants. This will be a relaxing walk that will take between 1 and 1 1/2 hours. Everyone is welcome. If you have a wildflower or tree/shrub book, bring it along. Participants are asked to meet at the Host Site at 10 AM.  This walk will be cancelled if it is very wet and rainy. "A Fun Way to Learn About Wildlife"

This fun day is for all ages but primarily children and youth.  There will be presentations of wildlife displays with members on hand to answer questions.  There will be a demonstration of fly tying and fly casting techniques, demonstrations on map reading and GPS use and will answer any questions that you may have. Bluff Wilderness Trail

Family/Youth Day on The Bluff Wilderness Hiking Trail

We will hike the first loop of The Bluff Trail (7.7 KM with a shorter return option (approx 5 KM), stopping for activities at a barrens site, an oak woodland, and a stand of old growth Acadian forest.  Activities will include natural history observations, nature notes, and geocaching with GPS and compass/map versions. Paddling Basics

Canoe Kayak Nova Scotia is offering an opportunity for the whole family to paddle canoes and receive some basic instruction as required.  Those who have paddling skills may go for a paddle in the quiet cove.  All the paddling is closely supervised in a designated area.  Volunteers will be there on the day to assist and personal flotation devices will be on loan from the Red Cross.  Canoes and safety gear provided will also be made available, however, it is first come, first served.  Dress for weather conditions and bring footwear that can get wet.  Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and insect repellent.  Meet at the boat launch.  Please note that you will be required to sign a waiver.  Contact Brian at (902) 673-2917 or email bmanderson67@gmail.com or visit www.ckns.ca.

Chester-Graves Island Walk and Potluck Picnic

Join the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club for a 5 or 10 km hike.  The 5 km walk begins at 11 AM and is rated as 2B - takes place on well groomed trails, very little hills.  The 10 km begins at 10 AM is rated 3B and also takes place on well groomed trails with some significant hills.  Dress for weather conditions and wear sturdy walking shoes o boots.  Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, water, snack and a contribution to the potluck picnic.  Meet at the park.  Take Exit 7 from Hwy 103, then Hwy 3 to East Chester and Graves Island Provincial Park.  Please note that a $1 registration fee will be collected prior to the walk.  For the 10 km please contact Margaret at (902) 454-9280.  For th 5 km walk, please contact Albert at (902) 443-1271.

Join Paul Gray, astronomer and tour guide to the skies over Blomidon Provincial Park along with members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada's Halifax Centre as they explore the night sky. Hike the "Back 40"

This 2 1/2 hour hike will be a loop that travels on the Look-Off and Wilderness trails - an interesting hike with lots to see.  This is a moderate hike over varied terrain with a fair amount of climbing involved.  There are several scenic view spots along the way.  Wear sturdy footwear(hiking shoes are the best if you have them) and an extra layer.  It can be cool along the coastal part of the hike. Bring along your camera/binocular if you have them. Cape Blomidon has gone by many names, each with an unique story of time and place.  Take a stroll through the park with Lucas McCamon and ponder the legends that seek to explain this profound geological form and its inhabitants.  You may also find hidden bits of human history that woven together, create a picture of the lives of families who called this Cape home.  Meet in front of Administration Building at the campground. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for weather conditions.  All ages welcome, adult supervision for children required. Pets welcome on leash.  Sponsored by NS Department of Natural Resources. Lifesaving Sport Series Round # 2

Beyond Biking

Come learn how to take care of your bike and even repair it yourself.  Participants will learn the importance and safety of maintaining your bicycle.  Learn how to tighten your chain, adjust the hand brakes, adjust the seat and handlebar height.  Participants will be educated on patching and changing a tire tube.  The importance of wearing a helmet and other safety gear will also be discussed.  Bring along your bike, helmet and tools if you have them.  Sponsored by NS Department of Natural Resources. Stargazing Weekend Astronomy Presentation
Join Paul Gray, astronomer and member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for a fireside presentation on Astronomy. Paul will talk about what is going on in the summer night skies, how to see it, and a bit of the folklore surrounding the constellations. A question and answer session will follow. Sponsored by the NS Department of Natural Resources. This event will take place around the campfire in the program area at the park. Please bring a lawn chair. If the skie are clear, this event will be followed by the Night Sky Tour to view double stars, clusters, galaxies and other objects in the night sky.

Join the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club for an 11 or 12 km hike suitable for adults.  This hike is rated 3C - a significant part of the walk takes place on somewhat difficult terrain (rocky/rooted paths) with some significant hills.  Meet at 223 Sambro Creek Road at the Crystal Crescent Beach parking lot, Hwy 349.  Dress for weather conditions and wear sturdy walking shoes or boots.  Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, water and a lunch.  Please note there is a $1 fee collected prior to the walk.  Contact John at (902) 477-3217.

Teddy Bear Picnic

Kids come out for a fun time with your favorite stuffed friend.  We will be participating in lots of games and songs with our Teddy Bear friends.  Parental participation is encouraged.  A light lunch will be provided to enjoy picnic style. Make sure you bring your teddy bears as well as hats, sunscreen, and water.  Pre-registration is required.  Sponsored by the Muncipality of the District of Shelburne.
